Support for complex needs and behaviours of concern

Some participants need workers who stay calm and respond the same way every time, especially when things get hard. Esteem Mentoring provides consistent NDIS support across Moreton Bay and Brisbane for people with complex support needs, and we implement Behaviour Support Plans exactly as they are written.

Calm and consistent support through difficult moments

We support participants who may experience emotional dysregulation, behaviours of concern, mental health challenges, communication difficulties or complicated family and living situations. Many have been through a long list of providers already. What they usually need is not a new approach every few weeks. It is the same few people, doing the same agreed things, with patience.

That is what we try to offer. We choose workers carefully for this support, keep teams small and make sure everyone has the information and training they need before their first shift.

Our approach

  • getting to know the person, how they communicate and what tends to trigger distress
  • following current support plans, risk plans and agreed strategies every time
  • using proactive, respectful and least restrictive approaches
  • noticing early signs and helping the person settle before things escalate
  • recording relevant information accurately after each shift
  • raising concerns early and escalating them through the right channels
  • working with the participant and authorised members of their support team

Implementing Behaviour Support Plans

Where a participant has a Behaviour Support Plan, Esteem Mentoring works alongside the participant's NDIS registered behaviour support practitioner and implements the authorised strategies within our role as a provider. Our workers are trained in the participant's plan before they start, and we feed back observations and data to the practitioner so the plan can be reviewed and improved.

Esteem Mentoring does not write Behaviour Support Plans and does not represent itself as a registered behaviour support practitioner.

Restrictive practices

Esteem Mentoring does not currently use restrictive practices. If this changes, any regulated restrictive practice would have to meet all applicable behaviour support, authorisation, consent, reporting and oversight requirements.

Working as part of the team

Complex support works best when everyone around the person is consistent. With consent, we work with families, behaviour support practitioners, psychologists, psychiatrists, support coordinators and housing providers. We share what we see, attend case conferences when asked and follow the agreed communication plan.

Who this support suits

This support suits adults aged 18 to 65 whose needs have made it hard to keep consistent support, including people with autism, intellectual disability, psychosocial disability or acquired brain injury. Before we agree to support, we look honestly at whether we have the right workers and skills. If we do not, we will tell you.

Complex support questions

What are complex support needs in the NDIS?

The term usually describes participants who need a higher level of coordination and skill from their supports, often because of behaviours of concern, mental health challenges, communication difficulties or several services involved at once.

What is a Behaviour Support Plan?

A Behaviour Support Plan is a document written by an NDIS registered behaviour support practitioner. It explains a person's needs and sets out positive strategies to reduce behaviours of concern and improve quality of life. Providers like Esteem Mentoring follow and implement the plan.

Do you write Behaviour Support Plans?

No. We implement plans written by the participant's behaviour support practitioner and work closely with them. If you need a practitioner, your support coordinator can help you find one.

Do you use restrictive practices?

Esteem Mentoring does not currently use restrictive practices. Any change would need to meet all NDIS authorisation, consent, reporting and oversight requirements.

How do you choose workers for complex support?

We look at experience, temperament, training and fit with the participant. Workers are trained in the participant's plans before they start, and we keep the team small so the participant sees familiar people.
