Supported Independent Living in Moreton Bay and Brisbane

Supported Independent Living (SIL) is NDIS-funded help with daily tasks in your home, so you can live as independently as possible. Esteem Mentoring provides SIL across Moreton Bay and Brisbane, built around your routines, the people you live with and your right to choose who supports you.

A home should feel like home

SIL is about more than staffing a property. It is about making sure each person feels safe and respected in their own home, and in charge of their daily life. The best SIL homes we know feel relaxed. People come and go, cook what they like, have friends over and get support when they need it, without the place feeling like a facility.

We build SIL support around each person's approved funding, living arrangement, goals and preferred routines. That might be a shared home with housemates or support in a home of your own.

What is SIL?

Supported Independent Living is a type of NDIS support that pays for help with daily tasks in the home, often with other people who also receive SIL. It can include rostered support during the day, overnight support (active or sleepover) and help to build independent living skills.

SIL pays for the support, not the house. Rent, board, food and household bills are paid separately by the participant, usually from their own income. Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA), where it applies, is funded separately again.

Support in the home may include

  • help with morning and evening routines and household tasks
  • personal care, provided with dignity and privacy
  • meal planning, shopping and cooking, together where possible
  • medication prompting and support in line with documented plans
  • building practical living skills and independence
  • support to follow health, communication and behaviour strategies
  • community participation and getting to appointments
  • overnight or rostered support where it is part of the agreed arrangement
  • working with your chosen support network and professionals

Compatibility and choice come first

Sharing a home works when the people in it get along. Before confirming any SIL arrangement we look carefully at compatibility: routines, communication styles, interests, noise, support needs, risks and personal preferences. We also think about the workers, because the skills and personalities on a roster matter as much as the number of hours.

Participants are supported to make informed decisions about where they live, who they live with and who supports them. You can bring an advocate, family member or support coordinator into every conversation.

Safety and quality at home

Each person has a documented support plan covering daily routines, communication, health needs, risks and agreed strategies. Workers are trained in those plans before they start. Where a participant has a Behaviour Support Plan, we implement it as written and work with their behaviour support practitioner. Medication support follows documented plans and our medication management procedures.

SIL questions

What is SIL in the NDIS?

SIL, or Supported Independent Living, is NDIS funding for help with daily tasks at home. It is usually provided in a shared home and can include day, evening and overnight support, plus help to build skills for more independent living.

Does SIL pay for rent?

No. SIL funds the support only. Rent, food and household costs are paid by the participant, usually through their own income such as the Disability Support Pension.

How do I get SIL funding in my NDIS plan?

SIL is added to a plan when the NDIA agrees it is reasonable and necessary, usually after a home and living request. A support coordinator or occupational therapist often helps gather the evidence.

Do you have SIL vacancies?

Capacity changes over time. Call 07 3882 1863 or send an enquiry and we will tell you what is currently available and whether it might suit.

Can I choose who I live with?

You should have a real say. We assess compatibility before any arrangement goes ahead, and you can meet potential housemates and workers before deciding.

Can I change SIL providers?

Yes. You can choose your SIL provider and change if things are not working. We can talk with you and your support coordinator about a planned transition.
